Establishing Relationships With Sources

I have learned many things at the Columbia Missourian this semester. One of the most helpful of those things is definitely establishing relationships with sources.

Doing this allows for easier and open communication. Sometimes those sources can give you new story ideas. Sometimes you are able to get more out of that person as they trust you. And vice versa, you can communicate what you are doing with them as well.

Throughout this semester, I have covered events that involve MU Chancellor Alexander Cartwright. He began to recognize me at these meetings and thus was able and willing to give me time for questions following the events.

The first event (click here for the story) was when a longtime MU School of Music Professor donated $4 million to the school for the Budds Center for American Music.

The second event (click here for the story) was the State of the University Address given by the chancellor himself.

The latest story (click here for the story) involved UM System Engagement Week where the 4 UM System universities came together to promote a system of engagement and community.

Chancellor Cartwright is always willing to allow time for questions following an event like these, but it really helps when you establish a professional and open, communicative relationship. And I have seen this through my interactions with Chancellor Cartwright.
